These are my musing, thoughts, ideas, etc. around al manner of things. I don’t update as often as I would like to, but you may find something of interest here from time to time.
A long trip: The Dog Blog
Today was a beautiful one, book-ended by a golden dawn over the Umatilla Valley and a sunset which made the Columbia into a ribbon of beaten bronze.
If you have been following my posts over the last week, you are probably asking, “Hey, shouldn’t you be backpacking to an alpine lake in the John Day wilderness today?”
And the answer to that question is yes. Yes I should be.
Children, let me tell you a story of high adventure… Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryus, there was an age undreamed-of. And unto this came Conan, destined to bear the jeweled crown of Aquilonia upon a ….
Oops, sorry that’s the opening to “Conan the Barbarian” (1982)
So, ahem… let’s try that again. We (Dog and I) left at about 5:30am and drove for about 6 hours to reach our destination, the “Baldy Creek” trail-head in the Wallowa Mountains. We rucked up at about noon and headed up trail first crossing the north fork of the John Day River via a wooden footbridge. We went about a mile and a half before coming to the crossing for Baldy Creek. It is at this point that things got exciting! Read more
My thought for the week…
“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion;respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.
When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”

An unexpected find…
Being a big guy, (6’7″ & 280) who was interested in upgrading from his Farmer John and paddle jacket to a drysuit, it was looking like I was going to have to have some custom work done so it would fit. I had a couple quotes done for a Kokatat in Gortex and there was just no way I could make it happen. ( A fellas got to buy groceries after all…) Read more
Spring…
Sitting in my home office watching the rain and wind buffet the house. I am thinking about how much I want to be out and about in the woods or on the water. I really can’t wait until the weather settles down a bit so I can pick up hiking again.
In the mean time I have been spending a lot of time in the kayak teaching myself new strokes and braces as well as going out on long and short paddles.
Last month I even took the boat to Pacific City and tried some surf entries, with no real luck, but I did have a blast!
So, lets hope the weather lets up here soon. Am looking forward to getting out of the house more.
Couple Hours on the River
Turned out to be a beautiful day for kayaking. Loaded up early and headed up the Gorge for a couple hours of paddling. Was cool and rather bright for a gray day. Not another boat on the river as far as I could see.
Could tell I had not done much over the winter as my kayak caluses have all gone and I ended up with some hotspots but no actual blisters.
And, saw a new bird today, the Canvas Back Duck – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canvasback
A male hanging with three females. They did not seem to mind me at all as I passed by.
All in all it was a wonderful outing.
Its a Long Winter
I am afraid it has been a long winter. I put on some (a lot!) weight and my motivation kind of went out the window… into the rain and gray.
I’ve done no kayaking and very little hiking over the last six months.
Well, that is changing. I am down 13 lbs and continuing to lose weight. I am feeling better and more spry. We purchased an Elliptical and as soon as this nasty cold is done I am getting back on the thing to get into shape for Spring and Summer adventures.
I did not like the 303 lbs that I was carrying around and now at 290, I am feeling better already. A couple personal goals for me over the next few months.
– Get down in weight to about 265 and build back up some lean muscle.
– Build up my endurance in my upper and lower body
– Finally get my Passport before April.
– Learn more about kayaking. Take some classes and go to the ocean.
I also want to continue to refit my kayak and hope that I can encourage Autumn to maybe come along on some simple day trips.
I am anxious to get out backpacking again and I know the more fit I become, the more fun I will have on the trail. I missed my window for Eagle Cap Wilderness last Fall, so that is high on my list of outings this season.
So, with that, I hope I am back here more often. I have a lot of support from my family and am really looking forward to getting out for some adventures.
Elk Meadows
Late getting this up here, but I posted the pictures from my solo (with Anubis…) trip to the SE section of Mt Hood. Camped in Elk Meadow and explored Gnarl Ridge all the way up to the timberline trail. It was wonderful! Check out the pics on my photo page.
Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’…
One of my goals for my 50th year is to learn to roll my Kayak. I have been practicing, but I just can’t get it so now I think it is time to try finding an instructor who can help.
Here are some of the resources I have been using on the web:
http://www.creativepursuits.net/kayaking.htm
http://www.nigelkayaks.com/983/159901.html
Lots more out there I am sure but I think with my height and weight, it might be a good idea to grab myself an instructor. I’ll let you know how it turns out. 🙂
Hiking
“I don’t like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains – not hike! Do you know the origin of that word ‘saunter?’ It’s a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, “A la sainte terre,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not ‘hike’ through them.”
– John Muir, quoted by Albert Palmer
